Ginny's major malfunction

Sometimes an animal in a shelter or sanctuary will treat you one way when you interact with them at the shelter, and then be totally different the second you get them home.

I remember this happening with every cat we had when I was growing up.  The cat we picked out at the Humane Society was never the same cat who came home with us.  The second their paws hit the floor in our house their true colors came out.

Ginny is the most extreme example of this phenomenon I've ever encountered.  And the weird thing is she continued to dupe us for a while before she decided to get real.

I'll admit, I brought her home from River's Wish based purely on her cute, cute, cute looks.  She is absolutely pint-size and has the snowiest white fur with calico markings.  Freaking adorable.

She was one of the only unpaired rabbits at RW, so I thought she'd be a good third wheel to the brothers.  They worry me sometimes because they are SO joined at the hip it seems likely that when one of them passes, the other will be so heartbroken he'll soon follow.

(I have such a good life I can afford to worry about stupid shit like that.  Also I'm using "worry" in the loosest sense of the word.)

At River's Wish, she cuddled right up under my chin and fell asleep.  And this behavior, which is basically my dream behavior of any animal because it satisfies some need in me that I am not at all proud of, continued for about six weeks.

She took real naps with me.  It was crazy.

And then all of a sudden she just wasn't that into us.

She's become the frostiest most curmudgeonly tiny white rabbit you'd ever care to meet.

She's like an adorable child star who knows how to trade on her good looks but is an utter brat.

And damn if I don't love her all the more for her aloofness.  It is so incongruous with her schmoopy exterior it's hilarious.

Also we thought she was still a baby when we got her but she never grew any bigger.

My little Ebeneezer Thumbelina.

Christmas in July

My plan was to keep posting old things here in an attempt to get "caught up," but it feels silly to post winter things in summer.  So here's the last catch-up post.  Consider the rest of it lost into the bottomless pit that is the "My Pictures" folder on our laptop.

Building a model boat/Christmas gift

River's Wish got some sheep.  This is Precious.

We spend a lot of our winter like this

Thanksgiving at Aunt Micky's

I cut off over a foot of my hair.  I still need to mail the braids to Locks of Love.  They're the creepiest, most serial killer-y thing I've ever stored in my desk.

Vinny in the grass

Can you believe Vinny has lived with us for over five years?!

We have no idea how old he is.  The hubs says Vinny is like Yoda and has lived for centuries.

He also calls him "Winnie" most of the time.

I say Freya can't be racist, because she has a Black friend.

Freya is Vinny's fourth bonded partner.

He outlived the first three - Lily, Sarah, and Bread.  These are all the bunnies we've lost, and they were each Vinny's buddy when they died.  It's possible he's got a black widow thing going on.

Freya should probably watch her back.

Paul's progress

Poor Paul is recovering from a spinal cord injury.  He's doing pretty well, considering he was completely paralyzed from the waist (does a rabbit have a waist?) down for a week or so.

Now he can hop in a lopsided way and one of his hind legs looks like it's almost back to normal.  The other one's not as great, but we've been taking him to see a vet/acupuncturist and I think it's helping.

I get a lot of eyerolls when I mention the acupuncturist to people, but if doing everything you can to help your animals is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

Plus it was sort of our fault he got hurt, so there's a bit of the guilt factor going on there.

But mainly we just love him.

Cuddlebun

This girl, she is my love.

She jumped up into my arms for kisses here.  And then wouldn't leave.  Do you know rabbits at all?  Do you know how they behave?  Not like that.  She's affectionate beyond words, and I adore it.

Freya and the hubs have a special bond too.  It's funny how uninterested she is in making friends with the other bunnies, but how clingy she is with her humans.  Oh my sweet girl.

12.9.12

Sweet Freya is officially the Hubs' new BFF, for reals.  She is unbelievably affectionate, to the point where she will majorly guilt trip us if we are ever not petting her.  Which makes it hard to get stuff done, but we find ways to work around it, because of how damn cute she is.  Of course I still miss my Lily girl, but Freya's cuddly in-your-face-ness has been a huge comfort.  In the picture above, Freya jumped up on his back when he stooped over.  They're both so goofy.

The year of the pie is still swimming along.  This month marks the halfway point, and so far we've done:

- Strawberry Rhubarb for July
- Mixed Berry (huckle, rasp, and black) for August
- Peach for September
- Apple for October
- Pumpkin for November
- Pecan for December

The peach pie was probably the best thing I've ever made or eaten in my whole life.

Blogger was "updated" sometime this year, and is now about a billion times less user friendly.  And even after I spend way longer on a post, it's never as cute and polished as I could get posts with the old system.  Bleh, progress, why fix things that aren't broke?  Anyway, that's my excuse for the downswing in post prettiness.

This weekend I'm wrapping presents and rooting for the snow that's falling very reluctantly.

5.5.12

G's been watercoloring up a storm at school (she's kind of amazing at it, but that's hardly news, because what isn't she great at?).

She wanted some good animal pictures to work from, so we took a little day trip to River's Wish, where she proceeded to show me that she's also got a knack for photography.

(She took every picture that she's not in.)
